A pair of Art Deco sterling silver and vitreous enamel cufflinks with a traditional leather football with stitching on one side, and the "Hoover Ltd. Football Contest 1938" in very striking yellow and black Deco colours on the other panel. They are very rare, and anything football related form this period is very hard to find, especially in this condition.
With regards to the contest itself, very little information can be found on it. There are some commemorative pewter drinking tankards from the same year from the contest, which helps to build the picture that it was a competitive event. Hoover Ltd. opened its new headquarters in Ealing, London in 1933. This stunning, now listed, piece of Art Deco design, by acclaimed architects; Wallis, Gilbert and partners, was 254,000 square feet and was home to one thousand six hundred employees at its peak, around this time. There is a very good chance that these cufflinks were either awarded as a "Man of the Match" award, or to the winning captain of an inter-company football tournament. Many early English football clubs were started from such factory teams. Arsenal Football Club, for example, came from workers at the Royal Arsenal, in Woolwich, London in 1886.
They have English makers marks which could be for London maker Daniel George Collins. Made in England, circa 1938. Condition is perfect. A great piece of English footballing history.
