George E. Edmondson Jr., or “Mr. Two Bits,” was a long-time fan and unofficial cheerleader for the Florida Gators football team, where he led the "Two Bits cheer" at football games from 1949 until his retirement in 2008. The Gators had lost five of their last six games the previous year, and fans booed the players and coaches before kickoff. Edmondson decided to boost their morale by leading them in a cheer about adding up bits. The Gators won the game, and fans loved it so much that he came back the next Saturday to do it again: “Two Bits, Four Bits, Six Bits, a Dollar; All for the Gators, stand up and holler!”
